The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) yesterday raised concerns on the ethics behind the decision to appoint Ali Sabry PC as the Justice Minister.

Stating that they did not share the same sentiments expressed on social media that the appointment of Ali Sabry, PC as Minister of Justice was wrong due to his faith, SJB however raised concerns about the ethics behind the decision.

“We have no issue with Sabry being appointed as Minister of Justice due to his faith, we are not worried about him being a Muslim. There has been some criticism on social media regarding a Muslim being appointed to that post. But, we as the Samagi Jana Balawegaya have no issue with it, we are not racist, nor do we care for a person’s religious background. We believe that all Sri Lankans should be treated the same,” SJB member Harin Fernando said.

The SJB however raised concerns about Ali Sabry being appointed as Minister of Justice, despite having been the defence counsel for nearly 14 politicians who were facing charges of corruption in the recent past.

“This is a dangerous trend; we view the Judiciary as the protectors of the country, but today those who are in power have appointed a man who defended them against corruption charges as the Minister of Justice. Is this right?” Fernando questioned.
