Mujibur Rahuman
Main Opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP Mujibur Rahuman yesterday delivered a scathing critique of the political hypocrisy surrounding the Batalanda Commission Report during the debate in Parliament on the latter.
Rahuman highlighted the violent actions of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and their severe impact on politicians, Police officers, and civilians, as documented in the Batalanda Commission’s final report.
Rahuman pointed out that the violent actions disrupted essential services and created a state of lawlessness, causing immense difficulties for the general public.
He accused political opponents of stirring up the Batalanda issue for electoral gain, noting that for 36 years, there was no proposal to investigate the assassination of JVP leader (Rohana) Wijeweera.
He criticised the JVP for forming a coalition Government formed with Chandrika Kumaratunga and the subsequent good governance Government led by Ranil Wickremesinghe, and for not addressing the Batalanda issue.
Rahuman questioned the current attacks on Wickremesinghe, pointing out that many of his critics had previously collaborated with him. Rahuman also commented on the statements made by the JVP over the alleged involvement of Gotabaya Rajapaksa in an incident in Matale, and the distribution of reports at the Galle Face protest site in 2022.
He called for accountability and questioned why no proposals were brought forward regarding these issues when the current Government came to power. He further criticised the NPP’s retired military organisation and its leaders, who were involved in the suppression during the 80s and 90s, for now seeking positions in the Government. Rahuman accused them of hypocrisy and warned against dragging the Batalanda issue into the current election. Rahuman emphasised that the historical wrongs committed by JVP political leaders cannot be erased, even if attempts are made to do so.
