Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Kurunegala District MP Indunil Thushara Amarasena strongly criticised the government’s 18% electricity tariff hike yesterday deeming it “inhumane.”
The MP criticised the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) General Manager, Chairman, Engineers, and other personnel accusing them of fostering corruption within the institution.
Speaking to the media, Amarasena said that the CEB’s financial losses are a result of these actions and rampant mismanagement, and it is unjust to burden the public with yet another electricity tariff increase without addressing the issue of corruption.
The MP pointed out that the Government has raised electricity tariffs three times this year alone citing various reasons to justify their actions, which has placed an unbearable burden on the public. “An 18% increase is significant. People have already been forced to use electricity only when necessary in order to manage the bill,” Amarasena said.
He expressed his disagreement with the CEB›s predictions regarding a decrease in hydroelectricity generation and an increase in fuel prices attributed to the Israel and Palestine conflict. He cited evidence and assurances that contradict these predictions, suggesting that they should not be accepted at face value. Amarasena questioned why the Government is subjecting the people to such punishment and hardship.
“Former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa was ousted as he forced people to live in darkness. It won›t be long before the current President and Government find themselves in a similar situation, having to flee under the cover of darkness for the very same reason,” Amarasena added.
