At the 146th Meeting of the Committee of Permanent Representatives of the UN Environment Program held on 20 June in Nairobi, Sri Lanka was elected to the Bureau of the Committee of Permanent Representatives for the period 2019-2021. The 146th CPR meeting was chaired by the newly appointed Executive Director Inger Andersen.
The Committee of Permanent Representatives is led by a five-member bureau elected for a period of two years. Each bureau member represents one of the five UN Regional Groups of member states. The Asia Pacific Group unanimously elected Sri Lanka and recommended to the Bureau to serve as Vice Chairman for a period of two years.
Accordingly, the nomination of Sri Lanka to the Bureau unanimously by the Asia Pacific Group is a clear indication of the acceptance of the active participation by Sri Lanka in the activities of United Nations Environment Program.
