The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) has paid Rs. 60 million as compensation to workers in the first four months of this year.
Issuing a press release, the Bureau said that this was paid under the insurance scheme for Sri Lankan foreign workers.
Rs. 34.41 million has been paid for Sri Lankan migrant workers who passed away due to accidents or illness. Those who passed away while employed abroad or those who returned to Sri Lanka due to illness and passed away within three months of the return were compensated.
Rs. 25.58 million has been granted for 623 Sri Lankans who have been tortured or fell ill while working abroad. In the past two years, the Bureau has paid Rs. 292 million to Sri Lankan workers who faced various issues while working abroad.
Minister Harin Fernando and his deputy Manusha Nanayakkara said that these workers were compensated as a part of the insurance scheme of the SLBFE and requested all Sri Lankans going abroad to register with the Bureau.
