Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Chairman Maithripala Sirisena addressing a press conference following the removal of the party General Secretary Dayasiri Jayasekara yesterday said the latter’s suspension from the party may be lifted subject to several conditions.
Sirisena emphasised that however Jayasekara cannot be reinstated as the General Secretary once more. “Instead, if he returns to the party, he may be considered for another position,” he said.
However, Sirisena fell short of explaining the reasons behind the sudden removal and suspension of Jayasekara.
In a statement to the media, Jayasekara asserted that he had not engaged in any wrongdoing against the SLFP. He deemed his removal from the General Secretary position as illegal and expressed concerns about ongoing efforts to expel him from the party.
“If the executive council and the party chairman want me gone, I will gladly leave the party. Those at the top are pushing for my expulsion. I cannot name them. Their intention is to remove me and annex the party to the UNP,” he alleged. He reiterated that despite suspicions, he had no intentions of seizing control of the SLFP.
