SLFP opposes awarding millions in damages for ‘political revenge victims’

The Sri Lankan Freedom Party (SLFP) yesterday said it will oppose any attempt by the Government to pay millions in damages to several Government officials and institutional heads over claims they were politically victimized by the ‘Good Governance’ Government between 2015-2019. 

The party release issued with the signature of its Chairman Maithripala Sirisena also noted it was unsuitable to portray the persons as ‘political victims’ as on observation of the list of names, it is evident the decisions were taken based on judicial proceedings. 

Sirisena also said the party opposes any decision made by the current Government to make payments amounting to millions in damages at a time where Sri Lanka is facing a severe economic crisis. “The Government’s priority now must be to save both the country and the people from the economic crisis and not waste public funds in this manner,” he said.
