SLFP leader and former President Maithripala Sirisena along with several MPs at the media briefing yesterday

Former President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday said that if the President Gotabaya Rajapaksa agrees to the proposal to establish an interim Government, the party leaders will discuss and take a decision regarding the Cabinet to be appointed.

The former President expressed these views while participating in a media briefing held by the Sri Lanka Freedom Party.

Sirisena further stated that steps could be taken to resolve the issues that have arisen in the country by forming an interim Government headed by a new Prime Minister.

He further said that the 20th Amendment to the Constitution should be abolished and the 19th Amendment should be reinstated with amendments to bring back the Constitutional Council. He said if the 20th was abolished and 19th re-established, the country would get international support to come out of this crisis. Fundamentally, the democracy in the country should be protected, he added.
