Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena

 SLPP National Organizer Basil Rajapaksa

The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) held a key discussion with one of its main allies, the Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP) led by Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena on Wednesday.

The discussion took place under the leadership of Gunawardena and SLPP National Organizer Basil Rajapaksa.

In light of the International Monetary Fund’s recommendation to increase assistance for individuals impacted by the ongoing economic challenges and those with lower incomes, a decision was reached to formally request the President, who also serves as the Finance Minister, to allocate additional funds in the upcoming budget.

The representatives from both parties emphasised the importance of continuing the Samurdhi subsidy, citing legal provisions in place for the gradual reduction in the number of beneficiaries for Aswesuma. The discussion covered a wide range of critical topics, including the current political climate in the country, the effectiveness of coalition politics, improvements to public welfare services, the alleviation of life burdens and assistance for those in need, consultations with trade unions and employees for decision-making in public institutions, institutional restructuring challenges, employee rights, issues related to welfare subsidies like Aswesuma and Samurdhi, healthcare system problems such as medicine shortages, electoral system considerations, and various laws requiring further examination.
