  • SLPP General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam stresses right of citizens to elect their leaders must not be curtailed in a democracy
  • Claims party is stronger than ever and is eagerly awaiting elections to display strength

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) General Secretary, Sagara Kariyawasam, dismissed allegations made against the party yesterday asserting that the SLPP is not involved in any scheme to postpone the scheduled presidential and parliamentary elections set for the upcoming year.

“There is an ongoing discussion and a prevalent notion in society that there are efforts to postpone the presidential and parliamentary elections. The SLPP does not endorse the delay of any election,” he said.

According to Kariyawasam, the SLPP is firmly committed to conducting elections as scheduled.

“In a democracy, the right of its citizens to voice their opinions and select their leaders should not be curtailed. The SLPP, therefore, has no intention of endorsing any endeavour to postpone elections in the country,” he emphasised.

Kariyawasam strongly criticised the unjust criticisms directed at the party in recent times and pointed out the party’s endeavours to protect the country’s people from the COVID-19 pandemic. “They are able to criticise us today because of our efforts to safeguard them,” he said.

He also noted that the party revival efforts are continuing successfully and it is therefore prepared to face any election.

“We have no fear of elections. We are eagerly anticipating elections to showcase our party’s strength to our rivals,” he added.
