Former President and Leader of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party Maithripala Sirisena yesterday claimed the ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) holds no threat against his party.

Addressing a press conference at the party head office in Darley Road, Sirisena said the SLPP has no mandate in the country today. “They are no challenge to us. They are a party that completely abandoned the country and its people,” he said.

“The people protested against them for four months straight. The leader of the country went AWOL. The cabinet resigned and some went abroad. SLPP holds no favour among the people today,” he added.

He noted that however, SLPP is now attempting to win favour among the people once more by holding public meetings and distributing leaflets. “They are trying very hard,” he noted.  Sirisena claimed while the SLPP held similar meetings in Polonnaruwa recently, the public did not appear to be keen on attending them.  The former president also denied the SLPP is a valid political party. “Where is its executive committee? What about its policies, an ideology and a program?” he asked.
