  • MP Rohitha Abeygunawardena says party agrees that electoral system must be reformed
  • Opines instead of amendments, a new Constitution must be introduced
  • Claims people of Sri Lanka still love Mahinda Rajapaksa

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Rohitha Abeygunawardena says the party welcomes the electoral reforms proposed recently by President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

“President Ranil Wickremesinghe says the electoral system must be reformed. We agree with this proposal,” he said, adding that he believes the introduction of a new Constitution is also now in order. “There are many criticisms about the 22A. I believe it is time we introduce a new Constitution rather than introducing amendments to the existing Constitution,” he said.

The MP made these comments during a press briefing held in Colombo yesterday. Abeygunawardena opined that the draft Constitution drawn up during the tenure of former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa should be adopted after discussions with various groups and making necessary changes accordingly.

Commenting on dissenting views on the party leadership of its own members, Abeygunawardena said the recent political meeting held in Kalutara proved despite these unfounded criticisms, the people still love the leader that is Mahinda Rajapaksa.

“We showed our supporter strength, the strength of our leader and that the people of this country have gratitude through this meeting,” he said. The MP said the party will commence its new program from Kandy next week and it will also hold a number of electoral organising committee meetings across the island.
