Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa yesterday accused the Government of conspiring to postpone all elections scheduled for next year.
Issuing a statement, Premadasa said, “Delaying or cancelling elections constitutes a grave assault on democracy.”
According to Premadasa, the present Government, unable to face elections, has unilaterally postponed local government elections and is now in the process of implementing certain anti-democratic measures to obstruct the presidential election set to be held in 2024.
“The Government’s ploy, masked as ‘changing the electoral system,’ is merely a piece of cake with a poisonous coating. The citizens of this country will not be deceived by such tactics,” he said. “Leaders who lack the people’s mandate also lack their support in any form. It is evident worldwide that the outcome of rulers who opportunistically seize power without regard for the people’s mandate or will, and employ various political tactics to govern, ultimately results in a tragic outcome,” he added.
The Opposition Leader assured that he and his party would firmly oppose any anti-democratic tactics employed by the Government.
“It remains a mere dream to anticipate an election from a Government whose President has openly undermined the people’s sovereign parliament with ridicule, insults, and humiliation. Nevertheless, we want to stress that we are fully prepared to take all necessary actions against this troubling course of action,” Premadasa said.
