Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa yesterday urged the Government to reverse its decision calling on public officials to report to work, pointing out that such a move paired with the emerging COVID-19 situation in the country at present could lead to another, possibly worse, wave.

“Some medical experts such as Dr. Malith Peiris, who is well versed with the coronavirus pandemic, has stated that Sri Lanka is in for its worst wave of the pandemic. The Government should take into notice these warnings and take steps to avoid a disaster,” Premadasa said in Parliament.

He also said children had been affected with COVID-19, noting that the premier children’s hospital in the country, the Lady Ridgeway Hospital, was running out of space and that Government hospitals were overflowing with COVID-19 patients.

Premadasa also tabled pictures of COVID-19 patients showing them sleeping on the ground in Government hospitals.
