Senior Additional Solicitor General Parinda Ranasinghe, Jr. is set to be appointed as the Acting Attorney General of Sri Lanka. He is scheduled to take the oath of office before the Chief Justice today (1). According to Article 61E (b) of the Constitution, read in conjunction with Article 41C, his appointment will be effective from 1 July to 11 July.

According to reports, Ranasinghe has been appointed Acting Attorney General, alongside his current responsibilities.

Ranasinghe is the son of K.A. Parinda Ranasinghe a former Sri Lankan judge, who was also the 38th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka. Ranasinghe, Jr. is currently tipped to be appointed as the Attorney General.

Recently, the Constitutional Council twice rejected President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s proposal to extend the tenure of former Attorney General Sanjay Rajaratnam PC for another six months.

As a result, former Attorney General Rajaratnam PC retired on Wednesday (26).

In the first vote, the Constitutional Council voted against extending his service by five votes, with only three MPs in favour. Despite criticism from the political, legal, and civil society sectors, the Council rejected the proposal a second time.
