Severe weather advisory for four districts

  • Landslide warnings issued, schools in Galle and Matara closed till Thursday 

The Meteorology Department yesterday issued a severe weather advisory predicting heavy showers above 150 mm for several part of the Island, resulting in several landslide warnings and schools being closed in Galle and Matara for two days.   

The advisory said that another spell of rain above 150 mm is expected in the Southern, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Western provinces, which is expected to last several days.  

The Meteorology Department said fairly heavy rainfall of above 75 mm is likely in some places in the North Western, Northern, Uva and Eastern provinces.

The Meteorology Department requested the general public to take adequate precautions to minimise the damage caused by temporary localised strong winds and lightning. 

The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) issued a level 1 (yellow) landslide early warning for certain areas in the Kalutara, Kegalle and Galle districts. 

In the Kalutara District, a landslide warning has been issued for the Agalawatta, Bulathsinhala, Dodangoda, Ingiriya, Mathugama, Palindanuwara and Walallawita Divisional Secretariat Divisions and surrounding areas. 

A landslide warning has been issued for the Yatiyanthota Divisional Secretariat Division and surrounding areas in the Kegalle District. 

In the Galle District, a landslide warning has been issued for the Elpitiya, Galle Four Gravets, Imaduwa, Nagoda, Neluwa, Niyagama and Thawalama Divisional Secretariat Divisions and surrounding areas.
