Six J’pura students remanded over ragging

Six students of University of Sri Jayawardenepura, who were arrested in connection to the incident where a first year student was hit on the head with a tyre during ragging, were yesterday remanded until 23 March.

Mirihana police arrested six students and produced them before the Nugegoda Magistrate’s Court yesterday. The Police said Mirihana Police was carrying out further probes into the incident.

The 20 year old student, identified as Pasindu Hirshan, was admitted to Colombo National Hospital on 5 March, and is currently being treated in the Intensive Care Unit.  According to hospital sources, the student is suffering from brain injuries and internal bleeding.

Meanwhile, an internal investigation is also being carried out by the Vice Chancellor of University of Sri Jayawardenepura.

University of Sri Jayawardenepura Student Union said the incident was an accident, and Hirshan was not subjected to any ragging at the University.
