Six persons who robbed a jewellery shop in Jaffna and stole Rs. 3 million in cash were arrested by the Jaffna Police.
The daylight robbery was carried out on 16 January, and among the suspects were two drivers attached to the Military Intelligence (MI) of the Sri Lanka Army, according to the Police Media Spokesman’s office.
Sources said that robbers first collected all jewellery in the shop in Kasthuriya Road, Jaffna and later threatened the shop owner and staff to give them a cash amount of Rs. 3 million. Police said the two drivers attached to the MI engaged in the robbery while in service and attached to two top-ranking officers of the MI.
However, the Jaffna Police, which used CCTV cameras and other information gathering methods, was able to recover over Rs. 2.3 million from the robbers, who are residents of the Colombo, Kandy, and Jaffna districts.
The Police said the six robbers, who posed as Police officers and claimed to have a court order to search the jewellery shop, had threatened the shop owner to give them cash.
Police investigators, headed by Jaffna Police Headquarters Crime Division Chief Inspector Chamli Palihena, Crime Unit Chief inspector OIC Inspector Kelum Bandara, and other officers are conducting further investigations.
