Six overseas arrivals tested positive for COVID-19 yesterday, bringing the total number of confirmed cases identified in the island to 2,959. Of the total confirmed cases, 1,024 are Sri Lankan arrivals from overseas and this includes the six cases identified on Sunday. In addition to this, 36 foreigners have also tested positive in the island.
The Epidemiology Unit adds that 950 Navy personnel and close contacts and 630 persons connected to the Kandakadu Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre have also tested positive. The Kandakadu cluster includes 508 detainees, 67 staff members, 48 family members and close associates, and five guest staffers, and 602 persons belonging to the cluster have recovered so far.
The number of active cases in the island is currently 136, of which 71 are at the Welikanda Base Hospital, 34 are at the Iranawila Hospital, 13 are at the Minuwangoda Base Hospital, and 11 are at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID). Hospitals are also monitoring 58 persons suspected of having COVID-19, including 13 at the Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) Hospital, nine at the Chilaw General Hospital, and eight at the Sri Jayewardenepura Hospital.
With a total of 2,811 recoveries so far, the Health Promotion Bureau states that the country’s recovery rate is 95.19%. Sri Lanka’s fatality rate rose to 0.41% following the death of a 47-year-old returnee from India on Sunday. According to the Epidemiology Unit, 12 COVID-19-related deaths have occurred in the island. In addition to this, 208,397 PCR tests have been carried out in the island so far, including 2,690 tests on Sunday.
The Sri Lanka Army, in a statement issued yesterday, said 1,212 persons left quarantine centres having completed the process. This includes, 260 from the Eden Garden Hotel Quarantine Centre, 255 from the Eco Surf Quarantine Centre, 178 from the Koggala Beach Hotel Quarantine Centre, 154 from the Ayurveda Quarantine Centre in Rajagiriya, 142 from the Kosgoda Sheraton Quarantine Centre, 79 from the Army Service Corps Quarantine Centre, 43 from Jetwing Beach Quarantine Centre, 31 from the Blue Waters Hotel Quarantine Centre, 26 from the Club Dolphin Hotel Quarantine Centre, 18 persons from the Mihintale Quarantine Centre, and 15 from Bacon Beach Hotel Quarantine Centre.
The Sri Lanka Army added that 10 persons from the Nipuna Boossa Quarantine Centre and one from the Biyagama Village Quarantine Centre left for home yesterday.
A total of 31,541 persons have left centres having completed the quarantine process so far, while 7,620 persons remain in 58 centres managed by the Sri Lanka Army, Sri Lanka Navy, and Sri Lanka Air Force. In addition to this, 65 persons from Ahmedabad, India and 20 persons from Doha, Qatar arrived in the island yesterday. All overseas arrivals have been directed to quarantine centres.
