From Oct. 26th to 29th, 2017 ROK NAVY Cruise Training Task Group visits its 5th destination, Colombo, Sri Lanka. A Destroyer, ROKS Kang Gam Chan and an Auxiliary Oiler Expanded, ROKS Hwacheon enter the Colombo Port. The 630 number of crew members and midshipmen will carry out various diplomatic events to celebrate the 40th anniversary of diplomatic ties between two nations. The crew are taking the shape of number ‘40’ as well as showing the national flags of the two countries
The 2017 ROKN Cruise Training Task Group, Commander RDML Yang, Yong-mo, class of ’44, including two South Korean Navy vessels - Kang Gam Chan (DDH) and Hwacheon (AOE) - will visit the Port of Colombo from 26-29 October.
This year, ROKN CTTG is visiting Colombo for the seventh time since its first visit in 1977.
The visit is organised to mark the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Korea and Sri Lanka, which falls this year, as a step to further strengthen cooperation between the two countries.
The 630 crew members, including 138 (72nd class) midshipmen, a Destroyer, ROKS Kang Gam Chan (DDH-II, 4,440 tonnage), and an Auxiliary Oiler Expanded ROKS Hwacheon (AOE, 4,400 tonnage) are participating in this year’s Cruise Training.
The South Korea’s Navy Cruise Training, the 64th since 1954, is a training program for first class midshipmen, soon to become officers, to provide them with actual naval vessel experience and enhance global leadership.
This year, the CTTG is on a 98-day long voyage of 18,558 NM (34,369 km), visiting 10 ports in 10 countries: Vietnam (Da Nang), India (Mumbai), the UAE (Abu Dhabi), Kuwait (Shuwaikh), Sri Lanka (Colombo), Indonesia (Surabaya), Thailand (Pattaya), Malaysia (Kota Kinabalu), the United States (Guam) and Japan (Yokosuka).
Various events will take place to enhance the friendship between South Korea and Sri Lanka, celebrating the 40th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two nations.
The following is the event line-up:
nOn 26 October (Thursday) 10.00 a.m. welcome ceremony will take place at the Colombo Port, hosted by the South Korean Ambassador to Sri Lanka Won-sam Chang, followed by a visit to the Sri Lanka Naval headquarters and Western Naval Command.
nOn 27 October (Friday) morning, a friendship match is scheduled between service members and midshipmen of Sri Lanka and South Korea, followed by mutual visits to each other’s vessels. From 6.00 p.m. to 8.00 p.m., an onboard reception will be hosted by the CTTG.
nOn 28 October (Saturday), an South Korea-Sri Lanka joint cultural performance will be performed by the Sri Lanka Naval Band and the South Korean Naval Performance Team, followed by cultural interaction events. The south Korean-Sri Lanka joint cultural performances will take place at the Grand Hall of the Sri Lanka Naval Headquarters. It will feature world-class performances such as the Naval Band, the honour guards, the naval entertainment team (Korean traditional quartet, magic show, singing performance) and midshipmen choir. The Taekwondo and the B-boy team will perform for the first time.
nIn addition, a defence exhibition promoting South Korea’s cutting-edge defence technology will take place on ROKS Hwacheon. In the promotion exhibition, various booths are ready to introduce the diversity of Korean culture and events, including the 2018 ROKN International Fleet Review, 2018 Pyeong Chang Winter Olympic Games (a world-famous event hosted in Korea 30 years after the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games) Hallyu (Korean Wave on films, dramas, K-pop, VR technology) and beautiful Korean tourist attractions.
nDuring their four-day visit to Colombo, crew members and midshipmen will travel to major sites and tourist destinations such as the Independence Memorial Hall, the National Museum and the Gangaramaya Temple.
nOn 29 October (Sunday) 10.00 a.m. the departure ceremony will take place and the ROKN CTTG will sail off to its next destination, Surabaya, Indonesia.
