The Excise Department has launched a special program to convert all areas except licensed excise zones into ‘illegal liquor and drug free’ zones.

This program is being implemented during this week in conjunction with the National Drug Prevention Week introduced by the President.

The Excise Commissioner General has instructed officials to carry out special raids and patrols in their respective excise areas. While monitoring distribution and sales of legal alcohol to ensure proper procedures are followed, the Excise Department has made arrangements to take legal action against license holders who violate license conditions.

In addition, awareness programs on the adverse effects of drug use will be conducted islandwide in schools, Dhamma schools, work places and venues associated with voluntary organisations. Public support is expected in this special program to eliminate illicit liquor and narcotics. The program will run until 1 July.

Meanwhile, the Excise Department has launched two special hotlines to provide information on illicit drug and narcotic-related matters. The department assures to protect the confidentiality of informants. Those hotlines are: 0112 045 077/0112 045 078.
