Sri Lanka India Society celebrates 72nd Independence Day of India and Platinum anniversary

Sri Lanka and India share a legacy of historic significance and substance; a heritage that stands firmly behind the Sri Lanka India Society as this distinguished body celebrates its Platinum anniversary; which coincides with the Society’s celebrations of the 72nd Independence Day of India. 

The Sri Lanka India Society, under the aegis of its current President T.S. Prakash and the Executive Committee, held its Indian Independence Day celebrations recently at the Taj Samudra, amidst an illustrious gathering of invitees and guests. The Guest of Honour was High Commissioner for India in Sri Lanka Taranjit Singh Sandhu. Also in attendance was State Minister of Foreign Affairs Vasantha Senanayake and other dignitaries. 

The event reflected the close ties shared by the two countries in many spheres – from cultural pursuits to science, educational, technological and knowledge sharing endeavours that have bound Sri Lankans and Indians together throughout the years. For centuries, India and Sri Lanka have strived to create and sustain a special bond that is unique to both countries, reflected in shared interests, cultural ties and a common way of life.



Addressing the gathering, Taranjit Singh Sandhu laid emphasis on the significance of the deep ties between India and Sri Lanka. He pointed out that India has always been committed to supporting people focused projects in Sri Lanka, while co-operating with Sri Lanka on several aspects of bilateral importance and significance. With India increasingly engaged in a global role as a regional powerhouse of technology and business, Sri Lanka has an advantage of being its closest neighbour and partner that adds a special meaning to the relationship between the two countries, he reiterated. 

The evening included special felicitation of past Presidents of the Society, the distribution of its annual magazine Maithri and cultural performances that added colour to the event.

For 70 years, the Sri Lanka India Society has worked tirelessly towards reinforcing a unique footprint of co-operation and encouragement between India and Sri Lanka; comprising of members whose commitment to the cause remains exceptional and noteworthy. Sri Lanka India Society continues to look forward to bigger and better ways of consolidating the distinctive bond between two neighbours in the Indian Ocean.
