Sri Lanka, Poland strengthen ties

Sri Lanka and Poland have agreed to enhance bilateral cooperation in a number of fields for the mutual benefit of both countries.

Sri Lanka’s State Minister of Foreign Affairs Vasantha Senanayake undertook an official visit to Warsaw from 15-16 February on the invitation of the Polish Government to conduct bilateral consultations to explore ways and means to promote political and economic relations.

State Minister Senanayake and Polish Foreign Affairs Deputy Minister Marek Magierowski held bilateral consultations on 15 February which covered areas such as cooperation in the fields of trade and investment, tourism, education, air connections, sports, green technology, maritime relations, combatting climate change, increasing people-to-people contact and other areas of common interest.

The State Minister emphasised that the two countries should cash in on the conducive economic conditions prevailing in Sri Lanka and Poland to intensify economic cooperation for the benefit of their people.

The State Minister also met with Sports and Tourism Deputy Minister Jan Widera and explored the possibility of establishing cooperation in the field of tourism for the mutual benefit of the two countries.

The State Minister also called on Entrepreneurship and Technology Deputy Minister Tadeusz Koscinski and exchanged views on developing cooperation in technology and services.

During the visit the two countries signed a bilateral agreement on air transport and a Memorandum of Understanding on sports.

State Minister Senanayake was accompanied by a business delegation which participated in a business forum organised by the Polish Chamber of Commerce and engaged in B2B meetings on 16 February. The private sector representatives of the two countries were advised to continue their interaction for creating business awareness for sustained trade cooperation.

Sri Lanka’s Ambassador in Warsaw, Poland, Tissa Wijeratne, Foreign Ministry State Secretary Grace Asirwatham and Foreign Ministry Assistant Director Priyangani Hewarathna were associated with the State Minister’s visit.
