Sri Lankan President congratulates Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina on election victory

Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena Tuesday congratulated Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was re-elected to lead the country for another five years after her party Awami League secured a landslide win at Sunday’s national polls, on her “resounding victory”.

“My heartiest congratulations to Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister of Bangladesh, on her resounding victory at the elections,” President Sirisena said in his official Twitter feed.

“The people of Bangladesh have placed unwavering trust in your leadership,” he said.

The Sri Lankan President said Sri Lanka looks forward to increasing bilateral relations with Bangladesh.

Sheikh Hasina’s party, the Awami League (AL)-led ruling coalition, won an astounding 288 out of the 300 parliamentary seats in national polls, marred with violence and disputed by the opposition, held on 30 December 2018. (ColomboPage)
