The official State ceremony for the traditional oil-anointing ritual of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year was held yesterday at the Natha Devalaya grounds, located within the premises of the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy.

The ceremony was being held under the auspices of the Most Venerable Mahanayake Theros of the Malwatta and Asgiri Chapters of the Maha Viharavansika Syamopali Maha Nikaya.

Health and Mass Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa who was present at the State ceremony for the traditional oil-anointing ritual of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, also visited the Malwatte Maha Viharaya and then met the Malwatte Mahanayake Most Venerable Thibbatuwawe Sri Sumangala Thero and then the Asgiri Mahanayake Most Venerable Warakagoda Sri Gnanarathana Thero. He inquired about their well-being, engaged in a brief conversation and received their blessings.

Dr. Jayatissa briefed the Mahanayake Theros on the current political situation, current activities in the health sector and future plans. He also informed the Mahanayake Theros about the steps being taken to restart the construction projects of the Kandy National Hospital which had been stopped halfway by allocating Government funds, and about the systematic planning of activities to minimise the many problems in the health service.

The Minister exchanged views with the Mahanayake Theros on the preparations for the special exposition of the Sacred Tooth Relic at the Sri Dalada Maligawa, which will be held from 18-27 April after 16 years, as well as the Vesak, Poson and Esala festival arrangements.

The Minister also spoke about the upcoming Local Government elections, the Government’s plans to implement after the elections, the Budget benefits provided to the people, and the future steps of the Kandy City Plan.

Dr. Jayatissa exchanged views with the Mahanayake Theros on the increase in salaries and allowances of security forces and State sector employees, and the Malwatte Mahanayake Thero expressed his views on this with great appreciation.

The Malwatte and Asgiri Mahanayake Theros said that it appears that the Government is doing a lot of work in a planned manner, and that it is also apparent that the Minister of Health and Mass Media is also doing a lot of work. Appreciation was also expressed for the speedy implementation of the Kandy City Plan, which has been under discussion for a long time, as well as the Government’s efforts to reactivate development projects that had been stalled.

Deputy Minister of Health and Mass Media Dr. Hansaka Wijemuni, Ayurveda Commissioner Dr. Dhammika Abeygunawardena, Basnayake Nilame of Sri Natha Devalaya A.W.S. Bandaranaike, Basnayake Nilame of Sri Paththini Devalaya Hemantha Bandara Herath was also present on these occasions.
