Sujeewa Senasinghe re-enters politics after two year hiatus 

• Appointed SJB Senior Vice President and Election Planning and Promotion Secretary

Former Minister Sujeewa Senasinghe has been appointed as Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Senior Vice President as well as the party’s Election Planning and Promotion Secretary, thus marking his re-entry into active politics. The party has now tasked Senasinghe with heading the party’s campaign for the upcoming Local Government election. 

Senasinghe quit politics in September 2020 and stepped down as the SJB’s Deputy Secretary at the time after his defeat in the parliamentary election that year. Announcing his decision to retire from politics, in a statement signed by his private secretary, Senasinghe claimed he would remain independent in the future. He also said he intended to focus on his business in the future and that he would commence work on his PhD in January 2021. 

However as early as November 2022, it was rumoured Senasinghe would return to politics and be given a top position in the SJB. 

Senasinghe commenced his political career as a member of the Western Provincial Council of the United National Party. He was elected to Parliament twice from the same party.
