Supreme Court rejects PUCSL petition on power supply

The Supreme Court yesterday rejected a petition filed by the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL), calling for relevant authorities to provide an uninterrupted power supply to the public.

The order was issued by a bench comprising of judges Gamini Amarasena, A.H.M.D. Nawas and Mahinda Samayawardene.

The PUCSL lodged a petition calling for the Supreme Court to issue an order to the Ministries of Power, Finance and Secretaries of the relevant Ministries calling for the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) to provide fuel to the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) to ensure an uninterrupted power supply.

The petition called for the Supreme Court to pronounce that the public’s fundamental rights have been violated through power cuts imposed on the public due to the fuel shortage in the country.

Ministry of Finance, the Minister of Power and Energy, Monetary Board, Governor of the Central Bank, the CEB and all other stakeholders of Government institutions have been cited as respondents in the petition.
