Suspect arrested for damaging Mawanella Buddha statues

Mawanella Police have arrested a suspect in connection with the vandalising of a Buddha statue in the Imbula area in Mawanella last month.

The suspect identified as Priyantha Sampath Kumara, is a 30-year-old resident of Hettimulla, Kegalle.

The glass enclosing the Buddha statute of the Shrine in front of the Dedimunda Devalaya near the Colombo Kandy Highway in the Hingula area in Mawanella had been damaged due to a stone thrown at it.

Police Media Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said the suspect is reported to be a drug addict and had previously been a suspect in breaking into the tills near the Buddha shrines and stealing the money.

The suspect had confessed to stealing about Rs. 60 that was near the Buddha statue of the damaged shrine, the Police Spokesman said.
