Suspended IGP Deshabandu further remanded till 10 April

Matara Magistrate’s Court yesterday ordered to further remand suspended Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Thennakoon till 10 April in connection with the Weligama shooting incident.

Thennakoon was wanted in connection with the shooting incident near a hotel in the Pelena area of Weligama on 31 December 2023.

He is accused of orchestrating the shooting involving officers from the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD), Weligama Police, and the Special Task Force, which resulted in the death of a CCD officer and injuries to another.

After an open warrant was issued to arrest Thennakoon, he surrendered before the Matara Court, having evaded arrest for 20 days, and was remanded.
