The 53rd al-Dai al-Mutlaq and the head of the Dawoodi Bohra community, Dr. Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin, offered a donation of Rs. 10 million as humanitarian assistance to the National Kidney Fund of Sri Lanka to enhance facilities and improve welfare and preventive care for patients impacted by the Chronic Kidney Disease of Unknown Origin (CKDu).

On receiving this contribution, President Maithripala Sirisena thanked Dr. Saifuddin for assisting the Government in the fight against the CKDu, which is considered a public health emergency and is affecting rural communities in Sri Lanka.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), CKDu has emerged as a significant contributor to the burden of chronic kidney disease in rural Sri Lanka. To accelerate priority action on this serious public health problem, the Sri Lankan Government is working closely with the WHO and other non-governmental organisations for prevention and treatment of CKDu while alleviating the suffering of those affected and their families. Dr. Saifuddin recently met with President Sirisena during the fourth Ashara Mubaraka sermon in Colombo. During his address to the gathering, the President had emphasised the immediate need for poverty alleviation and lasting peace in the island nation.
