TNA disregarding flood affected in North: SLPP  

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) yesterday criticised the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) for focusing on the plight of the flood affected in the north and assisting them adequately.

“While the Northern Province was affected by adverse weather, TNA MPs were celebrating Christmas in Colombo. They did not go to help people who cast their vote to send these MPs to Parliament,” MP Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena told reports at SLPP headquarters.

He said Sri Lanka military came to help people who were affected by flash floods and carried out relief operations to protect lives and properties. He noted Army personnel had risked their lives to protect civilians and provide temporary shelters.

“TNA was accusing military personnel that they were occupying civilian lands but when Tamil people are in danger only Armed forces came to rescue them. None of the TNA MP was there to help them. Therefore we have to understand the reality and what TNA really wants,” he said.

Abeywardena also said Tamil diaspora groups who constantly requested to withdraw Military personnel from Northern Province had failed to help flood-affected people in North. “It is clear who really wants to help people live in the north,” he added.

He claimed the United National Party (UNP) had not acted fast enough to provide relief either and that only President Maithripala Sirisena had taken necessary steps to aid the people of the Northern Province.
