TNA sets record straight on new Constitution

• Says Tamil community wants Constitution acceptable to the public and undivided SL

Leader of the Opposition Rajavarothiam Sampanthan, setting the record straight, assured the Parliament that the Tamils are hoping for an undivided country with less corruption and sound economic development.

“Many think that we have requested to divide the country by drafting a new constitution. This is wrong. Tamils wish for an undivided Sri Lanka, but drafting a new constitution will give all Sri Lankans equal recognition,” he confirmed.

 Reminding the House of the election promises the common candidate made in 2015, the Opposition leader stated that a new Constitution would help solve most issues currently preventing the country from moving forward.

 “We think the proposed Constitution should get the two-third approval in the Parliament. It should also be a Constitution accepted by the public. All we want is an undivided country that is just and equitable,” he added, urging the Government to solve the issues of the Tamil-speaking people in the northern and the eastern parts of the country.
