Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) National Organiser and Parliamentarian Tissa Attanayake voiced his scepticism yesterday regarding whether the 2024 Budget would bring any relief to the nation’s populace.
“I doubt that the Government will be able to introduce any significant concessional measures for the country’s citizens in the 2024 Budget,” he said.
Attanayake said the Government, which asserts its intention to introduce a budget focused on relief for the nation, should adopt a strategic approach to curb the cost of living for the citizens.
The MP made these comments at a press conference in Colombo yesterday.
He emphasised that the budget should be structured in a manner that stimulates the growth of the country’s income and production. “Failing to do so could potentially result in a decline in people’s income and an increase in expenditure during the years 2024-2025,” he said.
“The country is presently grappling with numerous crises, subjecting citizens to substantial pressure. Rather than providing relief to alleviate this pressure, the Government is implementing various measures that further exacerbate the challenges faced by the people,” he added.
Attanayake maintained that ministers from the Sri Lanka Freedom Party and Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna should be held accountable for the present situation in Sri Lanka. He added that the people are prepared to deliver their responses when the right moment arises.
