Toilets at CMC’s Viharamahadevi Park in terrible state

The toilets at the Colombo Municipality Council-run Viharamahadevi Park are in a pathetic state, according to both tourists and locals patronising the popular recreational area in the city.

One visitor told the Daily FT that all the toilets of the female side were broken and the warden who collected money had informed them that this had been the condition for many years and people should just collect water in a bucket and flush. Apparently this advice had not been followed and thus the toilets were in an unmentionable condition.

“There was a young female tourist digging for cash to pay the warden and I felt it was my duty to warn her of the condition of the toilet, feeling so embarrassed about our paradise island. The warden rudely asked me not to discourage the tourist since according to her many of them use it daily without complaining,” this visitor recalled.

Others said the monthly income from CMC charges could well be more than what was needed to build proper toilets at Viharamahadevi Park.
