Total COVID-19 cases increase to 2,880

  • Nine overseas returnees test positive for the virus

The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases increased to 2,880 as nine persons tested positive for COVID-19 yesterday. Of the new cases, five are returnees from the United Arab Emirates, three are returnees from Indonesia, and one is a returnee from Saudi Arabia.

Sri Lanka has over 970 imported cases, of which 946 are Sri Lankan returnees from abroad and 32 are foreigners. On Monday, four returnees from UAE tested positive for COVID-19 while undergoing quarantine.

The remaining 23 cases identified on Monday were from the Senapura Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre and the total number of persons that are from the Treatment and Rehabilitation Centres or are close contacts has increased to 630.

Of the cluster that emerged from the Kandakadu Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre, 508 are detainees, 67 are staff members, five are guest staff, 48 are family and close contacts, and the remainder is the individual who was identified from the Welikada Prison.

Local cases identified in the country also include 950 Navy personnel and their close contacts. According to the Epidemiology Unit, 2,880 persons have tested positive in the country so far and 247 persons are currently under medical care.

This includes 112 at the Kandakadu Treatment Centre, 63 at the Welikanda Base Hospital, 27 at the Minuwangoda Base Hospital, 18 at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID), 10 at the Iranawila Hospital, three at the Panagoda Army Hospital, and one at the Colombo East Base Hospital.

The Epidemiology Unit adds that 29 persons were discharged from various hospitals having recovered from COVID-19 during the 24-hour period ending at 10 am yesterday. 

Eighteen of the recoveries were from the Kandakadu Treatment Centre, five were from the Welikanda Base Hospital, three were from the Minuwangoda Base Hospital, two were from the Panagoda Army Hospital, and one was from the NIID.

The total recoveries in the country has thus risen to 2,622 and the Health Promotion Bureau states that Sri Lanka’s recovery rate is now 91.2% and its fatality rate is 0.38%. According to health authorities, 11 persons have died of COVID-19 in the country.

In addition to this, 49 persons suspected of having COVID-19 are currently being monitored at various hospitals, including 13 at the Sri Jayewardenepura Hospital, seven at the Welisara Chest Hospital, and six at the Chilaw General Hospital. The Health Promotion Bureau adds that 1,519 PCR tests were carried out on Monday and a total of 174,491 PCR tests have been carried out so far.

The National Operation Centre for Prevention of COVID-19 Outbreak (NOCPCO) yesterday stated that 43 persons returned from Doha yesterday and have been directed to quarantine centres. In addition to this, 118 persons left quarantine centres yesterday, including 112 from Galkanda, four from Miyankulam, and two from Punani.

The NOCPCO added that 29,757 persons have completed the quarantine process at centres in the country while 3,449 persons are currently undergoing quarantine at 39 centres.

Meanwhile, the President’s Media Division stated that the Itukama COVID-19 Healthcare and Social Security Fund surpassed a balance of Rs. 1,564 million following corporate and individual donations and direct deposits.
