Total COVID-19 cases increase to 3,122

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the island increased to 3,122 with the identification of one patient yesterday.

The Epidemiology Unit states that seven persons tested positive over the weekend. This includes six persons who tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday, of which five are Sri Lankan returnees from abroad. The remaining case identified on Saturday is an individual connected to the Kandakadu Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre and the Kandakadu cluster has now expanded to 641.

This includes 518 detainees under rehabilitation, 67 staff members, 48 family members and close associates, and five guest staffers. 

In addition to this, 950 Navy personnel and their close contacts are also included in the 1,904 local cases identified in the island. In terms of imported cases, 1,171 Sri Lankan returnees and 46 foreigners have also tested positive for COVID-19. 

The Epidemiology Unit adds that seven persons were discharged during the 24-hour period, ending at 10 a.m. yesterday, having recovered from COVID-19. This includes three persons from the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID), three persons from the Welikande Base Hospital, and one person from the Iranawila Hospital.

A total of 2,925 persons have recovered from COVID-19, and the Health Promotion Bureau calculates the country’s recovery rate as 93.72% and its fatality rate as 0.38%. A total of 12 COVID-19-related deaths have been reported in the island thus far.

The number of active cases in the country is 185, of which 12 are foreigners. The Epidemiology Unit states that 83 persons are currently receiving treatment at the Welikande Base Hospital, 71 are at the NIID, 25 are at the Iranawila Hospital, and three are at the Colombo East Base Hospital. 

There are also 57 persons suspected of having COVID-19 being monitored at various hospitals, including 13 at the Sri Jayewardenepura Hospital and eight at the Welisara Chest Hospital.

A total of 36,497 persons have left quarantine centres to date, and a further 8,330 persons are undergoing quarantine at 74 centres managed by the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
