Total COVID-19 cases rise to 3,111

  • Nine overseas arrival tests positive for COVID-19

The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the island rose to 3,111 yesterday with nine persons testing positive for COVID-19.

The nine persons who tested positive were overseas arrivals and a total of 1,199 overseas arrivals have tested positive for COVID-19 so far, of which 1,154 are local returnees and 44 are foreign arrivals. The Epidemiology Unit also identified 1,903 local COVID-19 cases.

Of the local cases, 950 are Navy personnel and their close contacts and 640 are connected to the Kandakadu Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre. According to the Sri Lanka Army, 518 persons belonging to the Kandakadu cluster are detainees, 67 are staff members, 48 are family members, and five are guest staffers.

The Sri Lanka Army adds that 626 persons of the Kandakadu cluster have recovered and 13 persons are currently under medical care.

The district distribution of cases shows 160 cases from the Colombo District, 38 from the Gampaha District, and 35 from the Puttalam District.

There are also 210 active cases in the island, including 10 foreigners, and the Epidemiology Unit states that 90 of them are currently receiving treatment at the Welikanda Base Hospital, 66 are at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID), 39 are at the Iranawila Hospital, and three are at the Colombo East Base Hospital.

There are also 80 persons suspected of having COVID-19 being monitored at various hospitals in the island, including 22 at the Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) Hospital, 18 at the Sri Jayewardenepura Hospital, and eight at the National Hospital of Sri Lanka (NHSL).

The Epidemiology Unit adds that six persons were discharged from various hospitals having recovered from COVID-19 during the 24-hour period ending at 10 a.m. yesterday. Of the new recoveries, four were discharged from the NIID and two were discharged from the Welikanda Base Hospital.

The total number of COVID-19 recoveries in the island has now increased to 2,889 and the Health Promotion Bureau calculates the country’s recovery rate as 93.13% and its fatality rate as 0.39%. Twelve COVID-19-related deaths have been reported in the island to date.

The Health Promotion Bureau adds that 232,710 PCR tests have been performed in the island, including 2,163 on Wednesday.

According to the Sri Lanka Army, 443 persons left quarantine centres yesterday, having completed the process. This includes 254 persons from the Hotel Gold Sand Quarantine Centre, 76 persons from the Hotel Dolphin Quarantine Centre, 65 persons from the GSD Wellawatte Quarantine Centre, 40 persons from the Hotel Blue Waters Quarantine Centre, and eight persons from the Mount Lavinia Hotel Quarantine Centre.

A total of 35,780 persons have left quarantine centres so far and 8,239 persons are currently undergoing quarantine at 74 centres managed by the Sri Lanka Army, Sri Lanka Navy, and Sri Lanka Air Force.

Meanwhile, 250 persons from Israel and Jordan, 31 persons from Qatar, and 26 persons from Nepal arrived in the island yesterday and have been directed to quarantine centres.
