U.S. and UK call on Govt. to act quickly against violence

US State dept. issues security alert of State of Emergency

The United States yesterday called on the Government of Sri Lanka to act quickly against the perpetrators of communal violence and end the State of Emergency while ensuring human rights.

The US Embassy in Colombo in a statement said the rule of law, human rights, and equality are essential for peaceful coexistence.

“It is important that the Government of Sri Lanka act quickly against perpetrators of sectarian violence, protect religious minorities and their places of worship, and conclude the State of Emergency swiftly, while protecting human rights and basic freedoms for all,” it said. Meanwhile, the US State Department last night tweeted a security alert to US citizens in Sri Lanka warning them of possible further unrest in the island nation.

British High Commissioner (BHC) in Sri Lanka James Dauris on Tuesday said recent inter-communal violence needs to be a serious concern for everyone in Sri Lanka.

“I am sure that people in every community will be looking to religious, community and political leaders to stand up against the spreading of mistrust and hate,” he tweeted.
