  • Calls on public support for efforts to improve social, political and human rights in 2020

United National Party (UNP) leader Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday said his party was focused on taking the democratic gains achieved in the past five years forward in 2020 and called for public support in this endeavour.

Releasing his New Year message, Wickremesinghe recalled that the UNP had accepted the country that was struggling in all spheres, including political and socioeconomic circumstances, in 2015 but had worked to turn it around.

“In the past five years we fought for the social, political, and human rights of the people. We were able to dispel the dark cloud that hung over Sri Lanka and rebuild international relations with global powers. We were also able to set the foundation for sustainable development by strengthening macroeconomic fundamentals and putting the economy on a sound footing,” the statement said.

“As citizens it is our collective responsibility to take these efforts forward in the next year. I wish all of you courage and determination to take this battle forward in 2020.”
