USJ variant PCR test results point to rapid spread of Delta variant in Colombo

Over 75% of PCR samples from Colombo studied during the last week of July were of the Delta variant, a report on the variant PCR tests carried out by the Sri Jayewardenepura University shows. According to Sri Jayewardenepura University’s Immunology and Molecular Medicine Department Director Dr. Chandima Jeewandara, the percentage of the Delta variant in the variant PCR samples was 19.3% during the first week of July. Dr. Jeewandara shared data on Twitter that showed that over 75% of the samples were Alpha and the remaining samples were Delta on 7 July. Between 16 July and 26 July, the Delta variant was detected in over 50% of the samples. On 28 July, over 75% of the samples were Delta and on 31 July, 90% of samples were Delta.

“This is the Delta variant’s ultrafast spread in Colombo,” Dr. Jeewandara’s tweet read.
