SLPP MP Uddika Premarathna
Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Uddika Premarathna speaking in Parliament for the first time after an attempt was made on his life by a shooter on Sunday, blamed the incident on the current political system in Sri Lanka.
“Instead of speculating about the potential culprits, my opinion is that I was targeted by the prevailing political system in the country,” he said.
An unidentified gunman had opened fire on Premarathna’s vehicle at around 10.30 p.m. on Sunday opposite his residence located down Airport Road in Anuradhapura. The MP escaped unharmed.
“We are all acutely aware that the present system is flawed. It is a sentiment shared by the nation’s populace as well. The current societal and political structure is also flawed, which is why the country finds itself in its current state,” he added.
The MP emphasised the need to address the situation and identify areas requiring correction. “We must identify these areas and collaborate with the public and politicians. Without this change, I don’t believe our country can be transformed into a developed nation,” he expressed.
He observed that the nation is demanding this political and social change. “All we are requesting is to enact that change. This is what we are being threatened for,” Premarathna claimed. The MP expressed his gratitude to those who inquired into his wellbeing following the incident and said he will continue to work for the change sought by the country’s citizens.
