Sri Lanka will begin vaccinating children aged 12 to 15 against COVID-19 starting Friday, Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said yesterday.
According to the Health Ministry, 30,000 children in this age group who suffer from various medical complications have already been vaccinated. Vaccination of the 15 to 19 age group has already begun.
Only one vaccine dose will be administered to the 12 to 15 age group.
Teachers, non-academic staff and persons providing school transportation services can receive their booster dose at the same centres that are administering the first dose to children. These vaccination centres will be set up in schools.
“I hope the Sri Lankan public seizes this opportunity and aids us in our fight against the pandemic,” Rambukwella said on Twitter.
He also commented on the vaccination card requirement when entering public places, which was to come into effect at the start of the year. This requirement can be made mandatory even if vaccination cannot be made mandatory, Rambukwella said.
According to the Health Minister, the technical aspect of this requirement is currently being carried out. A QR code and an app accessible via mobile phones will be introduced for this purpose.
