Vice Chancellors call for strategy to eliminate ragging at State universities

The Committee of the Vice Chancellors and Directors has called for a comprehensive strategy to eliminate ragging at State universities.

Issuing a statement, the Committee of the Vice Chancellors and Directors has noted with concern the recent spate of incidents of ragging and violence that have been reported following the resumption of in-person academic activities at State universities.

Categorically condemning all forms of ragging, the Committee said none of the Vice Chancellors condones or support ragging, or acts to protect perpetrators.

The Committee of the Vice Chancellors and Directors stressed: “All factions must be mindful that ragging at State universities is a complex issue which requires a strategic intervention to eliminate it.” 

“It must be recognised that ragging is carried out in a novel, sophisticated manner, using technology, with the collective power of the student groups backed by certain political elements. It uses a network of individuals and starts even before the students enter the universities and continues for a long period thereafter,” the statement added.

The Committee of the Vice Chancellors and Directors also emphasised that there needs to be a strong movement against ragging in civil society to encourage the new entrants to universities, and their parents, to stand up to organised groups of student perpetrators motivated by political intentions.
