Students should give priority to their respective religious and cultural values during their school career, urged Western Province Governor A.J.M. Muzammil.
The Governor was speaking to students and parents at the handing over of the three-storied building at the Dharmapala Vidyalaya in Kottawa North last week.
Muzammil was the Chief Guest at the opening ceremony of the Rs. 90 million school building in the presence of parents, well-wishers, teachers and students of the school.
During his speech, the Governor pointed out that the literacy rate of Sri Lanka is high in Asia and the students are performing well in various disciplines in the country. “We are proud that the high standard of education in the country is due to the free education provided by the State,” the Governor said, pointing out that therefore, students should know their duties and responsibilities of learning in the educational institutions offered by the Government.
He told the students that as much as the students give priority to education, they should also give preference to their respective religious education. “Education is more useful to the society provided there are religious values,” the Governor added.
Western Provincial Council Chief Secretary Pradeep Yasaratne and Central Environment Authority (CEA) former Chief Minister and Chairman Isuru Devapriya also graced the occasion.
