The A320, which was bound for Lahore in Pakistan, was parked at the Bandaranaike International Airport when the accident took place.
The bowser, which brought water to the plane, accidentally crashed into the rear of the plane, according to officials.
The driver of the bowser has been suspended and SriLankan Airlines has commenced investigations into the incident, according to a spokesman from BIA.
A SriLankan Airlines plane with 227 people on board has hit a runway light at Cochin Airport during take-off, foreign news agencies reported.
SriLankan Airlines in a statement said that the incident occurred when “UL flight 167 en route from Colombo to Cochin landed during an intense rain shower caused by the onset of the Monsoon at Cochin International Airport at 3:30 p.m. yesterday”.
“Due to the ambient conditions, strong winds and heavy rain, the aircraft veered toward the runway edge and caused damage to some ground lights,” the statement read.
“The flight landed safely with no injuries to passengers or crew. SriLankan Airlines affords the highest priority to the safety of its passengers and crew members at all times. The aircraft was given a thorough inspection and certified as undamaged by SriLankan Airlines engineering staff. There was minor damage to two lights on the runway. The flight was carrying a total of 228 passengers and 12 crew members.”
