Northern Province Chief Minister C.V. Wigneswaran yesterday split from the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) and announced plans to form a new Tamil political alliance.

Wigneswaran said the new alliance would be named the Tamil People’s Alliance (Tamil Makkal Kootani) and will consist of a group of Tamil political parties. Already some current and former Tamil National Alliance members have said they would join the new alliance.

Speaking in Nallur, Wigneswaran said that he was forced to form the new alliance by the TNA.

He accused the TNA of misleading the Tamils in the north and east by failing to address their concerns.

Wigneswaran said the new alliance would be an alternative Tamil alliance and would contest the next elections.

Wigneswaran entered politics through the TNA at the Northern Provincial Council elections in 2013 and was made Chief Minister after winning the elections. (Colombo Gazette)
