Accepting nominations for upcoming PC Council elections starts

Acceptance of nominations for the elections to two provincial councils has commenced, the Elections Secretariat said.
Nominations for the Western and Southern Provincial Council Elections will be accepted at the district offices until 12 noon on 6 February. Deposits will be accepted until 12 noon on 5 February.
The Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya told media that only authorised persons will be allowed to enter the nomination centres.
Accordingly, four members from an accepted political party and three members from an independent group will be permitted to enter.
The Elections Commissioner said the date of elections will be announced after considering the number of nominations accepted. However, it will be a Saturday, he said.
According to the Elections Commissioner 55,000 officials will be deployed for election duties and out of them 5,000 will be in charge of polling booths and 50,000 officials will be in charge of counting ballots.
