On the eve of the Deepavali festival, the All Ceylon Hindu Congress (Federation of Hindu Religious Associations and Temple Trusts in Sri Lanka) took a stand against the commercialisation of the religious festival and the inclusion of non-vegetarian items on Deepavali buffets.

The organisation expressed dismay that some hotels and restaurants were advertising Deepavali buffets containing meat, arguing that Hinduism forbids the killing and consumption of animals.

Furthermore, the ACHC emphasised that Deepavali is a feast meant for worship and called upon business establishments to desist from using the name of Deepavali for commercial purposes.
