ACMC Ali to take UPFA National List seat

The ruling coalition appeared to be effectively plugging the leaks yesterday, after All Ceylon Muslim Congress Eastern PC Member Ameer Ali agreed to accept a UPFA National List Parliamentary seat. Last week, UPFA National List MP A.H.M. Azwer resigned from Parliament – to make way for Ali, it was speculated at the time. Ali, a member of Minister Rishard Bathiudeen’s party, was one of three Eastern Provincial Councillors allied to the Government to sit independent of the ruling coalition, reducing its majority to 19 seats in the 37-member council. Initially Ali had been uncertain of taking the offered National List seat. The defection seemed to indicate a shifting of Bathiudeen’s alliances ahead of the presidential poll. The party is yet to make its stand clear on who it will support in the election. (DB)
