Air Force to deploy aviation unit to UN team in South Sudan

The Sri Lanka Air Force is to deploy an Aviation Unit under the United Nations helicopter deployment in South Sudan (UNMISS), the Ministry of Defence said. This is the second aircraft deployment by Sri Lanka and the SLAF under a UN mandate. This Heli-deployment will comprise 18 Officers and 86 Airmen and is scheduled to depart to South Sudan in the first week of March 2015, according to a Ministry statement. The passing out parade of the contingent was held at the Sri Lanka Air Force base in Katunayake on Friday (13). The commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Kolitha Gunathilleke took the salute. The Chief of Staff of the Air Force, members of the Air Force board of management and other senior officers were also present at the passing out parade.
